How to set your goals: Turn your resolutions into reality

Two thirds of us abandon our resolutions within a month, but it doesn't have to end there. Here's how to break big goals into meaningful milestones and actually follow through.

At the start of a new year, we are all consumed by our New Year's resolutions, drawing up mood boards and vision boards of everything we hope to achieve by December 31st. Then, suddenly, it's August and we haven't achieved half of what we had hoped for. This article is not a dig at you, as you are not alone- two thirds of people in the UK who make New Year's resolutions abandon them within the first month, including this writer.

You might be wondering why we are talking about New Year's resolutions in March, the end of the first quarter of the year. One of the many purposes of Dear Tomorrow is to ensure your resolutions don't start and end on January 1st. At the beginning of the year, you told yourself you wanted to eat healthier, go to the gym, attend more social events, and be more present for your loved ones. Are you still doing that? Did it run its course in two weeks, or did it last about a month?

With Dear Tomorrow, you can write a letter to your future self on what you hope to have achieved by the end of the year. But it doesn't stop there. You can use our platform to set meaningful goals and ensure they are actually attainable - turning your resolutions into reality, one step at a time.

How to set goals and turn your resolutions into reality?

Our goals shouldn't be treated as a wish list, but as an action plan. Here's how Dear Tomorrow can help you achieve that.

The One-Year Mark

This is the goal that 64% of us abandon. We tell ourselves things like "by the end of this year, I want to have my driver's license" and then it's October and we haven't even booked our theory test. Having a one-year resolution is absolutely important, and I wouldn't advise skipping it. But instead of simply having this big goal, break it down into a nibbles plan. Rather than just saying "I want my driver's license," ask yourself what that actually requires: booking and passing your theory test, paying for driving lessons, attending them consistently, and then finally taking your practical test. Suddenly, one big dream becomes a series of manageable steps.

The Six-Month Check-In

Halfway through the year, it's time for a reality check! This could mean giving yourself a well-deserved pat on the back for how far you've come, or it could mean revisiting why you set that goal in the first place and locking in again. Either way, remember, you can always start again at any point. It doesn't have to be a New Year's resolution to be a resolution worth keeping.

The Three-Month Milestone

At this stage, you've likely taken a couple of steps toward achieving that 'big' goal. This goal no longer feels impossibly far away. In fact, it might feel closer than you expected. What you set out to achieve by December could be within reach by April, or better yet, the actions you've been taking have quietly become habits you no longer have to force.

The One-Month Accountability Check

This is reminder from your past self that you set a goal, and it still matters. If you haven't taken a single step yet, that's okay. That's exactly why you wrote this letter- you can start now!
